Linux Release List 3.2016

2016-04-29 - orzo

Linux Release List has been updated for March 2016.
This month has been dominated by quality point&click games, be it Deponia Doomsday from Daedelic, or cute pirate adventure Nelly Cootalot, but nevertheless there's been plenty from other genres as well:
- hack'n'slash phenomenon Hyper Light Drifter
- second Angry Video-game Nerd retro-platformer
- grim pixelated survivalist sim Sheltered from Team17
- Paws, sequel to Shelter
- or turn-based isometric RPG Balrum that (on paper) sounds like single-player Ultima Online.

Linux Release List 2.2016

2016-03-13 - orzo

Linux Release List has been updated for Feb 2016. We have seen several major games this month, be it "full-price" 50eu XCOM2 by Firaxis / Feral, or half a dozen self-published indie games: American Truck Simulator (by Prague-based SCS Software), Firewatch (a debut by Campo Santo), Layers of Fear (by Polish Bloober Team), Plague Inc: Evolved (Ndemic Creations) or Gnomoria.
February 2016 is one the biggest months yet in history of Linux gaming, both qualitatively and quantitatively. All of the mentioned games represent their own niche genre; you won't find that kind of diversity on any other platform but PC... And everything suggests the year will just get better.

Shout Out: Parasite Demo

2016-01-21 - orzo

Every month there are dozens new games released on Linux, but only handful of them present themselves with a demo.
Certainly - when you look at all the competition on the entertainment market, all the books, movies, music, mobile f2p, TV - that surely speaks of our "game-dev" ego, doesn't it :)
You -- "customer" -- have to start asking dummy questions. What exactly makes us game-devs think; what makes us believe that we can pitch our game to you for less and price it for more? Why should you pay for this random crap, when you have other shit available for free?
Now... Parasite. The dev of this little game tries to do it right. It's not a click-bait title. Parasite follows the trend set up by VVVV, "funny retro platformer from 16-bit era" - without a demo, I wouldn't ever notice this game exists... And that would be a shame.
In Parasite you play an alien worm on a quest to clean his planet of human colonists, before they take over your world. It's a bit of "The Thing" played from the other side, but in a neat, kids-friendly way. You take over humans, dogs, whoever, and try doing your best to sabotage the colony, preferably killing everyone before they escape.
You can download the demo directly from Steam or alternatively you can try the browser version.
Parasite has been made by Raphael Gervaise. It's available for Linux, Win and OSX.

Shout Out: Pony Island

2016-01-11 - orzo

Often when a regular guy living a regular life walks into a gallery -- when he sees all the nonsensical crap on the display, all the weird/eccentric people talking laughing around -- he ends up angry, disgusted, even embarrassed: Those artists represent his culture? They stand up for his era, his generation? How can this be? What the hell is wrong with them? My kid could do better!
Pony Island is a game exactly like that :)
Just look at the screenshots. It's ugly :) It is a primitive two-hours long shit in a can; the only thing great about Pony Island is soundtrack, and that has to be bought separately.
If you a "regular guy" living "a regular life", you have to shake your head in disbelieve.
So, what makes us -- what makes the game programmers -- tell everybody "this is the game to play"? :) Why we love Pony Island so much?
Because Pony Island is a manifest, that's why.
If you've been making shitty [work-for-hire] games for well over a decade, if you had to write dozens of template-reviews month after month after month, if you are part of the "working-class" that keeps game-industry rolling, Pony Island is your ultimate shoe-sellers joke. Much needed and much appreciated, it's a stress-reliever that helps you get though the day, through the next pile of the exact same boring tasks you've been doing (over and over) for most of your tedious life - but this time, this time with a smile, for a while.
Never mind that by the end of the week Pony Island will be a fading memory.
By the end of the month we'll beg Valve to stop releasing copy-cats.
Right now, this weekend?
Think whatever you want, but Pony Island is the work of art, that's exactly what it is :)
